Why compounded semaglutide and Wegovy should not be described as the same product.
Regulatory status
Wegovy is an FDA-approved semaglutide product for specific indications. Compounded semaglutide is not FDA-approved.
Manufacturing and review
FDA-approved products undergo premarket review and standardized manufacturing controls. Compounded preparations are made under compounding frameworks and do not receive that same premarket approval.
Do not assume equivalence
Consumers should be cautious when marketing uses brand imagery or language that implies a compounded preparation is an FDA-approved generic substitute.
